The Bank of New York Company, Inc. Announces Quarterly Dividend

NEW YORK, October 11, 2005 - The Bank of New York Company, Inc. today announced that its Board of Directors declared a quarterly cash dividend of 21 cents per share on the outstanding shares of the Company’s Common Stock. The dividend is payable on November 4, 2005, to holders of record as of the close of business on October 26, 2005.

A dividend of 48.4375 cents per share was declared on the Company’s 7.75% Cumulative Convertible Preferred Stock for the period from October 2, 2005, through January 1, 2006. The dividend is payable on January 3, 2006, to holders of record as of the close of business on December 15, 2005.
