New contingency sites in Texas, no Hurricane Ike impact to clients

September 22, 2008 - A week can change everything, and yet the people of The Bank of New York Mellon remain resilient.

In the U.S. Gulf Coast and under difficult post-hurricane conditions, Bank of New York Mellon's Global Corporate Trust employees remain focused on clients.

The company's Greens Crossing contingency site located 20 miles from Houston was operational on Monday, September 15, the first full business day after the category two storm made landfall. A second site near Dallas is also up and running and our thorough contingency plans provided for continuity of operations.

Our goal is to reoccupy the Houston office on Travis Street, damaged during the hurricane, as soon as possible. Meanwhile, our contingency sites will be fully operational until the necessary repairs have been completed.

The Bank of New York Mellon Activates Houston-Area Contingency Plans, Backup Sites Operational

September 14, 2008 - The Bank of New York Mellon's downtown Houston site was significantly impacted by Hurricane Ike. We use this building to process and service our CDO, Structured Finance, Corporate, Municipal and International lines of business, which are part of our Global Corporate Trust business. Like so many homes and businesses in and around the Houston metro area, the strong winds, rain and flooding associated with the hurricane have resulted in damage to the 19-story Travis Street office building, including the three floors we occupy.

As we shared with you late last week, our priority in any emergency is the well being and safety of our employees, visitors and guests, and the continuity of our operations.

We are thankful that there have been no reports of injuries to our employees or their families so far. We closed the downtown Houston offices early last Friday to allow our employees ample time to return to their homes and families.

In anticipation of this event, we activated multiple sites, some of which are located in Dallas, Pittsburgh and Chicago. These sites are already on board to support clients. We also have a back-up recovery facility, approximately 20 miles north of the downtown Houston location.

Given the extent of the debris and storm damage sustained as a result of the hurricane, the downtown Houston facility is unsafe for occupancy and therefore closed. While we are restoring this office, our staff will be temporarily relocated within the Houston and surrounding areas.

For your convenience, please use either of these telephone numbers if you have any issues contacting your Client Service Representative:

We appreciate your patience during this time. And, you can be assured that our business continuity plans have been activated so there will be no disruption to your business.

Global Registry and Custody Service of Voluntary Carbon Units
While the Kyoto Protocol is moving toward regulation for the signatory countries, a voluntary carbon emissions offset market has developed to meet current needs. The Bank of New York Mellon created the Global VCU Registry and Custody unit to provide participants in the voluntary market with a tool that will contribute to development of a fungible market in Voluntary Carbon Units (VCUs).
